Archive Afternoons at Lochaber Archive Centre ...

01 November 2023

Starts: 14:30
Ends: 16:30

From the 18th October onwards, Lochaber Archive Centre will be launching our Archive Afternoons, an initiative that has been extremely successful in our other centres. These afternoons (from 2.30pm-4.30pm) will give the public the opportunity to learn something new, chat with staff and other visitors, and interact with our collections in a fun and informal atmosphere. To begin the monthly sessions, Ken Johnston, a regular user of Lochaber Archive Centre and the former Head of Planning for the Highland Council in Lochaber, will be delivering a presentation on the history of the Charles Kennedy Building. Accompanying this will be a display of items from our collections on the theme of 'Buildings and Built Heritage'. Entry is free

Site Tour: Prehistoric Rock Art at the Clava Cairns [Culloden] ...

01 November 2023

Starts: 14:00
Ends: 16:00

Prehistoric Rock Art at the Clava Cairns

The Clava Cairns are on the ‘tourist trail’ around Inverness.  Lots of people visit these impressive monuments, but few take time to examine the rock art built into them.

There are about 17 panels (with cup marks, grooves, and cup and ring marks) of different types, some of which are ‘hidden’.  Why are they built into the cairns?  Is their positioning in the cairns significant?  How do they relate to other rock art in the area?

Alan Thompson will lead a walk around the cairns where we will find and talk about the panels there.

Email Alan at alanrossthompson@hotmail.com to sign up. Prebooking essential. Open to members of the public. The event is part of NOSAS 25.
